The woods’ last vestiges of foliage shimmer as the November sun blazes through the trees.
My landscape paintings are explorations, sans studio, of the rural spaces that made up my childhood. Painting in situ; absorbing the sights, sounds, and smells of the Midwest landscape, my works are full of painterly energy and intense reflection. Thick, honey-like dabs of paint meld together and reveal a distant tree line at the far end of a pasture, a crisp sky reflected on a pond’s glassy surface, or a close up inspection of a fungus-ridden stick buried under fallen leaves. The most rewarding days of painting plein air are ones in which I’ve seen the sun in both states of ascension and repose and every vector in between.
