Idioms have taken a central role in my work recently because of the way that their meaning is so dependent on a broader cultural knowledge or context. The bottom canvas says “green grass”, but it isn’t very green, and it looks more like tile than grass. I was thinking of Jasper Johns and his paintings with words for colors that have been painted in a different color (the word red is painted in blue and so on). The greener grass is pretty green though, referring to the idiom, “the grass is greener on the other side of the fence”. The green hand on the top points to where this green grass might be found. A pun on desire, hope, and futility.
