THE TALE The title of this piece refers to a somewhat fatalistic saying of Venezuelan origin. “A Child that is Born Pot-Bellied, Will Remain so even if He’s Made to Wear a Girdle.” The saying describes a person with a defect or behavior that we assume will never change. The painting is that of a seemingly rude or vulgar character who is yet capable of tender gestures. This piece expresses a human complexity that the saying does not. A person might never change, not so completely, but a person might expand and be beautiful that way. |
