In 2018, my mother and stepfather moved from politically charged Venezuela to Chicago. My mother and stepfather decided to work as Uber drivers because they do not speak English, and their economy was precarious. This is due to the disparity of Venezuelan currency and the challenges brought to their business. Sometimes they come back from work with the hope of one day living in one of the homes they admired in their drive. Mom does this quite often, she likes modern architecture. Her home in Venezuela was a modern home. The complexity of my mother's feelings towards her present situation inspired this portrait. In her eyes, I rendered her strength and vulnerability. The text behind is a fragment of a beautiful letter written by her uncle a few years ago. The letter speaks of the trials of life, of unconditional love, and of faith.
