In the summer of 2020, a short time from when the pandemic started, I found myself obsessed with making cyanotypes. Using weeds from my backyard to create images in addition to templates of polka dots, I considered the lack of control nature has. Putting the template of polka dots was a way of manipulating the plant life into order as manmade objects often do to nature.
I see nature as a metaphor for time. I manipulate fragments from the natural environment such as flowers, weeds, and everyday objects that I collect from places like my backyard or from loved ones; to cast or transfer onto a surface in order to attempt to preserve the memories connected to these beings, specimens, objects, and plants. In the effort to preserve beauty, I invariably confront a loss of image and the grotesque may appear. I am in constant awe of nature and obsessed with documenting it. Knowing the beauty will fade, decay, rot, and discolor, I want to savor the moment.
