THE TALE In the 17th century, a plague doctor was a physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague, also known as the Black Death. These physicians wore a mask with a bird-like beak to protect them from being infected by the deadly disease. The bird-like faces in Fedele Spadafora’s aptly titled “Don’t Touch Your Face” series uses the plague doctors of the Middle Ages as a reference point to connect and demonstrate how our world has changed now that the pale horse of pestilence rides again. |
