In 2016 I visited Martin Puryear’s exhibition titled Multiple Dimensions at the Art Institute of Chicago. The exhibition focused on Puryear’s process of drawings and printmaking as essential components of his studio practice. I was inspired by the sincerity of his drawings. There was a small series titled Drawings to Self that inspired the making of this artwork. Puryear’s series depicted various iterations of Self, a sculpture Puryear was to create. My Drawing to Self took the meaning of that title more literally. This artwork presents symbols that have always been relevant in my work, and they are organized in such a way that in their sum, they speak of something as tangible as a three dimensional sculpture. The chair is a surrogate for a person,  and it stands at the top of the stairs. The stairs are a symbol of ambition and hope. The hand is the hand of a poet, Marianne Moore - this element speaks of the poetry embedded in daily life.
